Der renommierte Missionshistoriker Prof. Ulrich van der Heyden beleuchtet anhand des Burenkriegs (1899-1902) in Südafrika die doppelte Rolle der Berliner Missionare im Unterjochungskrieg der Briten: die Missionare waren sowohl aktiv in den Kolonialarmeen als auch als Anwälte der afrikanischen Missionsgemeinden gegen die europäischen Kolonialtruppen. Warum beteiligten sich Missionare in Kolonialkriegen gegen die afrikanische Bevölkerung? Was motivierte sie im Gegenzug, diese gegen die Kolonisatoren zu verteidigen? Und nicht zuletzt: wie waren die Basler Missionare in gewalttätige koloniale Konflikte verwickelt?
Mission societies wanted to bring peace. But in what way were they involved in violent colonial conflicts? Using the Boer War (1899-1902) in South Africa as an example, the renowned mission historian Prof. Ulrich van der Heyden illuminates the dual role of Berlin missionaries in this British war of oppression: the missionaries were both active in the colonial armies and as advocates for their African congregations against the colonialists. Why did missionaries participate in colonial wars against African populations? What motivated them in turn to defend them against the colonizers? And last but not least, how were Basel missionaries involved in violent colonial conflicts?
